All about the experimental band from Philadelphia
“MAN MAN” is an experimental band which has its origin in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Their musical genre is characterized through its experimental rock, their musical style, however, described as Viking-vaudeville, maniac Gypsy Jazz. Furthermore the band is known for their exuberant live performances since it was founded in 2003. When performing, every member of the band dresses in a white outfit as well as wears specific war paint.
Moreover it has to be said that the band uses pseudonyms for their members. So the front man of “MAN MAN” is called Honus Honus (real name: Ryan Kattner). The other members of the band are Pow Pow (real name: Christopher Powell), Critter Crat (formerly known as “Crougar”, real name: Russell Higbee), and Chang Wang (real name: Billy Dufala). Prior to deciding on the band name “MAN MAN”, the band was named “Gamelon” and for a while “Magic Blood”.
During 2007 “MAN MAN” was the opening band in several shows of the American indie rock band “Modest Mouse”. “MAN MAN” greatly benefited from these opening performances and so gained public attention during Modest Mouse’s U.S. tour in 2007. Shorty afterwards “MAN MAN” was given another possibility in order to gain fame und much more attention. Strictly speaking the major publicly traded sportswear and equipment supplier “NIKE” started airing a few commercials starring the American actor Rainn Dietrich Wilson, also known as Jeff Vanderslice, with MAN MAN’s song “10 lb Mustache” as the background music. Besides, this song along with “Feathers” as well as “Engwish Bwudd” was featured in the third season, strictly speaking in episode 8, of the famous American comedy-drama television series “Weeds.”
Furthermore “MAN MAN” is characterized through its multi instrumental style that is generally based on the piano playing of front man Honus Honus. This style is accompanied by the singing and of course many other different instruments played by the rest of the band such as a clavinet, flute, trumpet, sousaphone, saxophone, French horn, marimba, euphonium, drumset, Fender Jazz Bass, Danelectro Guitar, microKORG, xylophone and a series of many other percussive instruments. Besides, it turns out to be very remarkable that on recordings, lead singer Honus Honus generally plays a specific honky tonk style piano. During the live shows of the band, however, he uses a so-called Rhodes Piano. When it comes to the general stage and music show, many bands do use in addition to special light effects also requisites such as for instance curtains, boxes, etc.
“MAN MAN” released their third studio album titled “Rabbit Habits” in 2008. In March of the same year the band started a North American tour.
